Spreizprüfstand Autotow

The fluctuations in quality of the initial materials presents a large problem for fibre composite based manufacturing processes. Multi-filament threads (Heavy Tows) are important fibre composite starting materials that consist of a number of different fibres. The costs decrease with an increase in the number of filaments involved. However, alongside this increase the number and extent of inhomogeneity and fibre miss-orientation in the thread also increases, which in turn has negative effects on further processing. In going through a spreader (see Picture 1), the initial elliptical cross-sectional area of the multi-filament thread is fanned out to form a thin and wide cross section. However, the inhomogeneity in the multi-filament yarn is insufficiently compensated for as the spreading process is not actively regulated. The aim of the project Auto-Tow is to develop a spreader bar in order to further develop the spreading process. It creates and implements rules that dynamically adapt the spreading level of the bar based on calculable quality values (width of the yarn, filament distribution and orientation). The spreading level is thereby regulated by different, adjustable process parameters (wrap angle, thread tension and relative velocity).
