The mechanical and plant engineering sector is facing major challenges: digitalization and demands for sustainability are changing processes and workflows. At the same time, the sector is struggling with the shortage of skilled workers, which is also reflected in the low number of female applicants and female employees. Many companies in the mechanical and plant engineering sector are asking themselves how they can attract and retain the target group of women and, to this end, use the potential of in the current transformation.

With our current study, which we are conducting on behalf of the IMPULS Foundation of the VDMA e.V., we are addressing this question. Within the scope of the study, we investigate factors for the lack of female engineers in the industry. With the help of an analysis of company websites and social media regarding the self-presentation and perception of companies, focus group workshops with female students, interviews with (former) employees of the industry as well as a site visit in three companies, concrete measures for attracting and retaining female engineers will be derived.
